4 Common Types of Wooden Fence Designs

Oct 24, 2022

Wooden fences are essential in a home since they can enhance the security and privacy of your home. These fences also improve your home's curb appeal, giving visitors a good first impression. Additionally, the fence may improve your property value, especially if you want to sell your home.

You can install various types of wooden fences around your home. Therefore, selecting the design that suits your home can be difficult. This article highlights four common types of wooden fence designs you can install in your home.

1. Lattice

Lattice fences comprise thin wooden slats in a crisscrossing pattern creating beautiful square-shaped gaps.

This pattern largely prevents people from seeing through but allows enough light to pass, making your home look larger. Also, the pattern makes the fence attractive, enhancing your property's visual appeal. To make the fence more attractive, plant climbing plants and train them to climb through the gaps.

Although a lattice fence offers various advantages, the fence requires regular maintenance. To maintain a lattice fence, clean each section with a soft brush to get rid of dust. Once you finish, you can sprinkle water on the entire fence with a hose.

 2. Picket

A picket fence is a short fence about four feet tall. The fence features evenly spaced pickets nailed onto horizontal rails, allowing for some visibility without compromising security. These spaces also enable your fence to withstand strong winds since the wind will pass through and prevent the panel from falling over.

Often, people use picket fences for their front yards and gardens. You can also use this type of fence as a pool enclosure.

Although this fence design does not offer privacy, they are affordable. Also, picket fences can prevent pets or young children from leaving your home. This type of fence is suitable for individuals who want a safe barrier that is still friendly to visitors and neighbors.

3. Post and Rail

Post and rail fences are a common wood fence design featuring perpendicular posts that you drive into the ground with horizontal rails that fasten to the posts.

You can use two main methods to attach the horizontal rails to the posts. First, you can drill holes in the vertical posts and insert the horizontal rails. You can also nail or screw the horizontal planks to the post.

This fence design is common in large farms that contain livestock, preventing them from wandering into your neighbor's property and causing damage. Additionally, the fence can help you mark a clear boundary between your property and your neighbor's.

People like using this type of fence since it is easy to install and maintain. Nevertheless, post and rail fences cannot enhance security since people can pass through. The fence also doesn't promote privacy since people can see through it.

4. Louver

Louver fences are similar to post and rail fences since both have vertical posts with horizontal slats. However, in this case, the horizontal slats are close and face the same direction. The design enhances privacy while allowing light and air to pass through.

Louver fences can add a modern touch to your home. However, you need to hire a professional fence contractor to install the fence properly.

Often, people use louver fences for their patios and pools. You can also use this fence around your swimming pool or parking pad.
